The Definition and Impact of Productive and Counterproductive Behavior

There is a huge difference between productive and counterproductive behavior, and they have a very important impact on business. This article will discuss the definition and impact of productive and counterproductive behavior.

The Definition of Productive and Counterproductive Behavior

Productive and counter productive behavior plays key roles in the productivity of an organization. These types of behavior are also an important part of organizational psychology. Understanding the definition of both productive and counterproductive behavior will allow an organization to maximize productive behavior and decrease counterproductive behavior.

Productive behavior and counterproductive behavior is opposite of each other. Productive behavior relates to behavior that increases productivity. This type of behavior is "defined as employee behavior that contributes positively to the goals and objectives of the organization" (Britt & Jex, 2008, Ch. 4). Productive behavior promotes, encourages, and aids an organization in its purpose, but counterproductive behavior does the opposite.

Counterproductive behavior takes away from the productivity of an organization. This type of behavior is "defined as behavior that explicitly runs counter to the goals of an organization" (Britt & Jex, 2008, Ch. 6). Counter productive behavior comes in many forms such as alcohol and drug abuse, theft, sexual harassment, and employee absenteeism; counterproductive behavior can also be considered ineffective performance (Britt & Jex, 2008). Productive and counterproductive behaviors have a strong impact on an organization.

The Impact of Productive and Counterproductive Behaviors

An organization is inevitably impacted by the behavior of its employees. An organization is positively impacted by productive behavior, and it is negatively impacted by counterproductive behavior. Job performance is also an area that is affected by productive and counterproductive behavior.

The performance of an organization relies on the behavior of the employees. If employees are productive the organization will be productive and gain value for stakeholders. If the employees are counterproductive the organization's performance will be negatively impacted and lose value. The performance of an organization is directly linked to the productivity of the employees.

Job performance can easily be impacted by both productive and counterproductive behaviors. A productive employee can encourage another employee to be productive which will increase their ability to perform their job. A counterproductive employee can discourage, interrupt, and aggravate a productive employee which will negatively impact job performance. It is important to try to increase productive behavior and decrease counterproductive behavior to keep job performance and the performance of an organization at its highest possible level.

It is important to fully understand the definition and impact of productive and counterproductive behavior on business to be successful.

Home, School and Society Affect Educational Goals

Educational goals and standards are directly affected by the goals and standards of the society in which the school exists. Home, society and schools play many similar and different roles in the educational systems of today, and educational professionals have to use these relationships to benefit the students.

Home plays a huge role in education because students come into the classroom with thoughts and situations that they have acquired from their homes. Some students have preconceived notions of values and morals that they learn from home (Lamlech, 2006). Some of these ideas can be positive and some can be negative, but the teacher has to figure out how to use these ideas and views to bring the class together instead of apart. Some students do not have stable homes, and this can cause many problems in the child's ability to be educated. The teacher must get to know each child and establish a healthy relationship (Lamlech, 2006). If this occurs than the student will be able to talk to the teacher and look for help. The home lays the foundation for the child's educational experience.
Society also plays a role in a child's educational goals and standards because it also provides students with a sense of values and beliefs. Society provides children with a picture of how they are suppose to act. Society also sets standards in which students and the American population are suppose to be educated (Lamlech, 2006). Because of societal views the government has passed many laws establishing standards for students, and educational institutes are supposed to meet these requirements (Lamlech, 2006) . As a teacher I would take advantage of the government programs that help with the education of society, and I would inform my students of them because there are many programs such as financial aid, that can help increase a student's ability to learn.
School plays a role in educational standards and goals as well. Schools directly implement the standards and goals of a student (Lamlech, 2006). Schools provide programs for students such as tutoring and math clubs, and these programs help promote education. Teachers must take full advantage of these programs, help create and volunteer for these programs, and inform the children of these programs in order to truly benefit from them.
There are many levels that influence the standards of students, and they should all be optimized in order to optimize the educational level of today's classrooms.

The Negative Impact of Organized Religion

Organized religion is something that many people cherish; it is something that many people live their lives by. Organized religion is a concept that was meant for good purposes, but it does not always serve good purposes. When mass amounts of people are influenced they can do horrible things and wonderful things in the name of God, but the people that head most organized religions do not always promote what is good and righteous. There are many benefits of organized religion, but there are many negative impacts as well. War and hate crimes are two negative effects that organized religion has had on society.

War is an obvious effect of organized religion, and there are many examples of this. The Catholic Protestant war in Ireland is a perfect example of this. The crusades are another fine example of organized religion creating havoc. The most recent example is the World Trade Center and the Iraq war. It is supposedly because of religion. I believe that there are a lot of religious fanatics in the United States and the world, but I also feel that our government makes it seem like something new when it is not. I think a lot of the problem is our occupation of their country, but it still has ties with religion. Organized religion is meant to unite people, but in many cases it has only accomplished separation, stereotypes, and war among peoples.
Hate crimes are another effect caused by organized religion. When the World Trade Center was attacked many Muslim and Arab people were victims of hate crimes. A lot of people thought it was patriotic, and that anyone who was Muslim was a terrorist. A lot of innocent people were and still are discriminated against and abused because of this. The KKK is also another example of hate crimes due to organized religion. The KKK, a form of organized religion, has strong religious beliefs yet they lynched and abused many African American people. Hate crimes come from ignorance and organized religion can promote ignorance instead of alleviating it.
It is amazing to me that people can take such a beautiful thing, such as religion, and turn it into such an ugly spectacle. It is sad when people use religion as an excuse to hurt each other. It is astounding that hate and war can come from religion when the basic ideas in all religions are love and unity.
